HBFF 2017 NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS!

HBFF is now accepting submissions for the 2017 festival, which include: feature-length narratives, shorts (30 minutes or less), documentaries, student films and web series. In addition, HBFF seeks film submissions for African Diaspora, Directors In-Focus, Our Diverse Stories, along with scripts for the Storyteller Competition and science fiction/science fact story ideas for Project Stargazer.

Film Competition

HBFF accepts film submissions from all filmmakers; however, to be eligible for the festival’s competitive program, one of the film’s creative principals, i.e. the writer, director or producer must be Black or of African heritage. All other films will be considered for our invitational program. Please notify the festival in your application if your submission does not meet the requirements for the competitive program and you wish to be considered for the invitational program.

We also accept submissions from outside the U.S. and Canada for our World Cinema Program. Submissions from Africa, the Caribbean, Central or Latin America are accepted for the Film Diaspora Competition.

Submissions for the 2016 HBFF Storyteller Competition are sought from black screenwriters who are serious about a career as a screenwriter. Submissions of screenplays of 90-120 pages, on any topic and genre, will be accepted.

Project Stargazer

Project Stargazer, open to all citizens of the United States who write or co-write the material, is accepting science fiction or science fact story ideas for film, television or web series that clearly feature NASA technologies, space or earth science facts as integral plot elements. Submissions must include a logline, synopsis, treatment and an artistic statement describing your creative vision and how a NASA mentor could help your project. Main characters must represent the diverse panorama of the 21st century.

Submission fees for all categories are detailed on Film Freeway. SUBMISSION FEE WAIVERS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. While we recognize the financial difficulties that many filmmakers face, submission fees are necessary to help defray the cost of operating the festival.
